Wreck Trip May 2008
# 689 : Date Posted: May 05, 2008

Two days of diving the coast got mixed results.

Saturday had cool temperatures, choppy seas, and wind.  The Spar and the Aeolis were our two wrecks.  Lots of fish.  Not everyone got to see the sharks but they were reported to be plentiful on the bow.  Mal-de-mer struck a number of the group due to the timing and rolling of the waves.

Sunday started with the U-352.  Cloudy and a little rough on the way out but cleared up nicely upon arrival.  The sub was all ours as no one else came out that far.  Reported sightings of eels, jacks, bait fish, crabs, and lion fish.  Some times the fish were so dense you couldn't see parts of the wreck.  Very little current and good visibility.  Still a little chilly
The Spar was number two.  We had seen a number of sharks the day before and came back looking for more.  Visibility was about 50 feet.  Saw a about  6 to 8 sharks ranging in size up to around 10 foot.  Most were 4 to 6 foot long.  Lots of other fish kept us occupied.  Another group was practicing wreck penetration so lines were all over the wreck heading inside.

Good dives overall.

40 Fathom Grotto Update
# 681 : Date Posted: Apr 01, 2008

We dove 40 Fathom grotto for the first time in a year.  There has been lots of work to the upper area and docks.  The new operators are really doing a nice job on the facilities.  Everfyone there was very nice and extremely helpful.

Topside shows the most change.  All the buidings have been fixed up and new bathroom facilities have been added.  The put in more covered areas with picnic benches for setup and expanded the parking areas.  The installed a new compressor and fill station.  Fills are quick and easy with a multiple fill hoses and fills to full rated pressure.  No more 3000 psi limit.  They are strictly enforcing the hydro and visual rule and will only fill to rated pressure.  Though out of oxygen this weekend they offer air, nitrox, and trimix fills onl site.  Fill prices for air have dropped.

The visibility was disappointing, about 20 to 40 feet at best.  Sometimes less than 10.  In the past we saw better visibility even with the covering of duckweed.  They have removed much of the duckweed and that may be why the vis is down.  The duckweed inhibits the growth of algea by blocking sunlight.  Plus there were more divers than I had ever seen before.  Underwater was still fun with lots of toys for training.  Our divers completed the TecRec Deep course with a final dive to well over 150 feet.

Divers can be checked out to dive the Grotto now.  Once checked out you will no longer need a guide to dive there.  This is a major and welcome change initiated by the new operators.  Groups can be managed easier as not everyone will have to dive with the group dive every time.  Much easier on us.
