Q and A: Passports To Be Required for ReEntry

Here is some important information from the U.S. Department of State and DHS on passport requirements. Please note two dates, one is effective Dec. 31, 2005, the other Dec. 31, 2006.
Effective December 31, 2005, all nationals will be required to hold a passport to enter the United States when traveling from the Caribbean, Central and South America. This will primarily impact U.S. nationals traveling to/from the Caribbean and Panama since a passport is not required for entry into these countries.

Effective December 31, 2006, all nationals will be required to hold a passport to enter the United States when traveling from Mexico and Canada.

Note that although some countries and islands will still not require a passport to visit, the US will require you have a passport to get back in the country.
